The console supports the following control group types:

  • Couple - a temporary group that allows parameter adjustment across a range (or subset) of channels.
  • VCA Groups - a permanent group that provides master control of several channels from a single fader strip. All channel parameters are grouped; offsets are allowed.
  • Surround VCAs - a permanent group that provides master control of the surround component channels from a single fader strip. Surround VCAs are created automatically. All channel parameters are grouped; offsets are allowed.
  • Link Groups - a permanent group where every member is a master. You can choose to link (or not link) individual parameters. For example, to link EQ across multiple channels, while keeping fader levels and other parameters independent.

The control group hierarchy is as follows: Couple, Link, VCA and Surround VCA. This means that:

  • Whenever a channel is part of a couple, all other groups are temporarily suspended. This allows the couple function be used at any time, and across all types of channels and groups.
  • A channel can be assigned to both a link group and a VCA. For example, the vocal soloists within a choir can be controlled by a link group for the choir, and by a separate VCA for the soloists; the link group takes overall priority.

Important: Please take care of the overall gain structure, especially if you are nesting VCAs, adding a VCA master to a Link group or combining the Couple function with other types of group. Offset values can wrap around and result in large volume changes when adjusting a master, if the gain structure is not properly managed.

The Couple group and Surround VCAs are already described. Please see Couple and Surround Masters.

The rest of this chapter describes VCA Groups and Link Groups, and the parameter behaviour of all group types.
