mc²36 - System Settings -> Listening
The Listening options determine how the AFL and PFL buttons operate.
Listening → Solo
Key Mode
Sets the AFL and PFL buttons to be either latching or momentary:
- Latching = the function latches on or off with each button press.
- Momentary = the function is active while the button is pressed. i.e. press and hold to activate; release to cancel.
Listen Latch Mode
Sets the mode for the channel LISTEN functions:
- Sense = momentary operation. The AFL is active while you touch a rotary control. When you release, the AFL cancels.
- Latch = latching operation. The AFL latches on when you touch a rotary control, and cancels when you touch a control on a different module or deselect the LISTEN function.
Listening → AFL
AFL Mode
Determines whether AFL selections are additive or exclusive:
- Exclusive – only one AFL can be active at a time. If you press a different AFL, then this cancels the previous selection.
- Additive – multiple AFLs can be combined. This allows you listen to a group of channels in context.
AFL Follows Access
Controls the behaviour of AFL when you update the channel in access. It can be used to automatically monitor a channel whenever you change the channel in access. i.e. AFL follows the fader SEL. This option works best when the AFL Mode is set to Exclusive.
- AFL Follows Access (on) – AFL selections follow the channel in access.
- AFL Follows Access (off) – AFL selections are independent of the channel in access.
Access Follows AFL
Controls the behaviour of the channel in access when you select an AFL. It can be used to automatically update the channel in access whenever you select an AFL. i.e. the fader SEL follows AFL.
- Access Follows AFL (on) – the channel in access updates when you select an AFL.
- Access Follows AFL (off) – the channel in access is independent of AFL selections.
AFL1/SIP & AFL2 Clear
These buttons can be used to clear all active AFL selections.
- AFL1/SIP Clear - press to clear all active AFL1 or Solo-in-Place selections.
- AFL2 Clear - press to clear all active AFL2 selections (on isolated bays with AFL2/PFL2 enabled).
Listening → PFL
PFL Fader Mode
Controls how PFL responds to fader open and fader closed. There are three possibilities:
- Off = the fader position does not affect PFL.
- On = PFL cancels when a fader opens.
- Return = PFL becomes active when a fader closes.
PFL can also be triggered when you pull back on the fader (backstop PFL). Go to "Fader/Joystick → Fader" (in the Settings list) and set the Fader Backstop option to On+PFL.
PFL Mode
Determines whether PFL selections are additive or exclusive:
- Exclusive – only one AFL can be active at a time. If you press a different PFL, then this cancels the previous selection.
- Additive – multiple AFLs can be combined. This allows you listen to a group of channels in context.

- Access Follows PFL (off) – the channel in access is independent of PFL selections.
PFL1 & PFL2 Clear
These buttons can be used to clear all active PFL selections.
- PFL1 Clear - press to clear all active PFL1 selections.
- PFL2 Clear - press to clear all active PFL2 selections (on isolated bays with AFL2/PFL2 enabled).
Listening → SIP (Solo-in-Place)
SIP Mode
This option enables or disables destructive Solo-in-Place (SIP).
- Off – SIP is disabled; all AFL selections are non-destructive.
- In Place – SIP is enabled; all AFL selections act as destructive Solo-in-Place.
When Solo-In-Place is active, the AFL selections no longer feed the AFL bus, but mute all other channels that are not in Solo (so that they no longer feed the bus outputs). Solo-in-place is very useful for post production, but should NOT be used for live broadcast or theatre production.
Tip: You can use the Solo Safe option (in the Channel Config display) to prevent individual channels being muted when a Solo-in-place button is active.
AFL1/SIP Clear
This button is a repeat of the AFL1/SIP Clear (under Listening → AFL). It can be used to clear all active Solo-in-Place (or AFL1) selections.
