Use Case 4 – Point-to-Point Tieline Between Two Production Systems
Scenario Overview
This use case represents a simplified variant of Use Case 3, focusing on a direct connection between two independent production systems, such as:
- Two OB trucks
- An OB truck and a broadcast facility
- Two production control rooms
In these scenarios, there is often a requirement to establish a temporary, back-to-back tieline connection for the purpose of bidirectional signal exchange.
Operational Challenge
Traditional tieline implementations typically involve:
- Static configuration of predefined signals
- Manual setup on both connected systems
- Limited flexibility once the connection is established
Changes during operation (e.g., adding or replacing signals) often require:
- Reconfiguration on one or both sides
- Potential interruption of ongoing production
This makes classical approaches less suitable for dynamic or fast-paced production workflows.
Implementation Using Stream Share App
The Stream Share App (SSA) enables a significantly simplified and more flexible approach to point-to-point connectivity.
Topology Model
The setup typically follows a Master/Client (Parent/Child) model:
- One system acts as the managing (Master) system
- The other system behaves as a consuming (Client) system
The Master system:
- Configures the SSA
- Defines senders and receivers
- Controls which signals are exposed
The Client system:
- Connects via NMOS
- Consumes provided signals
- Routes return signals into defined receivers
Dynamic Signal Exchange
With SSA, the physical connection between both systems becomes a flexible signal transport layer, rather than a statically defined tieline.
Key characteristics:
- Signals are assigned on demand by routing them into the SSA
- Both outgoing and returning signals are handled via the same mechanism
- No reconfiguration of the underlying setup is required once the connection is established
During operation:
- Signals can be added, removed, or replaced at any time
- Changes are applied instantly through standard routing actions
Operational Workflow
- Establish IP connectivity between both systems, 1 connection for management, 1 tieline for essences
- Configure an SSA instance on the Master system
- Expose the SSA via NMOS to the Client system
- Perform signal exchange via:
- Routing into SSA senders (outgoing signals)
- Routing into SSA receivers (return signals)
From this point onward, the tieline behaves as a fully dynamic exchange interface.
