.edge is a high-density SDI to IP conversion gateway and routing platform.

.edge Frame (fully populated)

Description

The hardware is designed in a scalable fashion where each 19" / 2RU frame can be fitted with up to 4 x processing blades (fitted to the front) and up to 4 x I/O plates (fitted to the rear).

At the heart of the system are the processing blades (up to 4 per frame). Each blade handles the IP connections plus the SDI conversion and signal processing. A series of software licenses is used to unlock the available resources of each processing blade.

At maximum capacity, a single .edge frame can provide up to 192 SDI ↔ IP conversions and up to 1152 x 1152 matrix crosspoints (based on 1080i video formats and non-redundant routing). The routing capability can be expanded further by clustering multiple frames.

All processing blades provide basic video and audio processing functions as standard. More advanced features, such as input frame synchronization, 3G UHD gearboxing and 100Gbps operation, can be added as and when they are needed (via software licenses).

.edge is natively integrated into HOME and can also be controlled using Ember+ or REST API.

At-a-Glance

  • Support for SD, HD and UHD signals on all SDI connectors.
  • Based on open-industry IP standards: ST2110, ST2022-7, RAVENNA, AES67, etc.
  • Compact footprint, lightweight, low power requirements.
  • Per frame: dual-redundant power supplies and temperature-controlled cooling fans.
  • Per processing blade: 6 media + 2 management ports. 25Gbps operation comes as standard; 100Gbps available via software license.
  • Per rear I/O plate: 48 x HD-BNC (for SDI interfacing) + 5 x HD-BNC (for external synchronization). The number of available SDIs is determined by the number of ".edge_sdi" licenses (on the processing blade).
  • Basic features: SDI signal transparency; clean and quiet switching; audio shuffling and test-tone insertion; audio and video delay; output frame synchronization; support of multiple timing planes.
  • Advanced features (available via software licenses): Input frame synchronization; Video Gearboxing; 100Gbps operation (including 3G and UHD format support).
  • Remote control via HOME, Ember+ or REST API.

Applications

.edge can be used to replace an existing SDI router or add distributed I/O to a networked installation.

In the example below, two .edge frames are used to provide local SDI I/O in two different locations. The signal conversion and processing can be remotely controlled from any network access point, and signals can be used by/received from other network devices (e.g. V__matrix).

If more I/O is required, then multiple frames can be clustered.

By adding software licenses, .edge can be easily scaled to meet the needs of SD, HD or UHD operation.
